Initial examination before laser eye surgery

Initial examination before laser eye surgery

Why is an initial examination necessary?

We care about you receiving the best possible care for your vision at our clinic. That is why we need to know not only your dioptres, but also many other details and factors that affect the health of your eyes.

We cannot achieve perfect results on the basis of e-mail communication. During the initial eye examination, we will examine your state of health with special diagnostic devices and determine which laser surgery method is suitable for you. The difference between the methods lies mainly in how the cornea is exposed so that it can be corrected. On this basis, we distinguish between surface procedures (Lasek, No Touch - TE PRK) and deep methods (Z-Lasik, Femto-Lasik, Relex Smile 3D).

How to prepare for the initial examination?

At our clinic, we carry out a detailed pre-operative examination, which can take up to three hours. For it to be as accurate as possible, you should not wear soft contact lenses for at least five days before the procedure. We recommend putting hard contact lenses aside for 21 days. Both types of lenses deform the surface of the eye, which can lead to inaccurate examination results, which fundamentally affect the subsequent laser surgery.

How does the initial examination work?

The initial examination before laser eye surgery is divided into a basic and an extended part. In both cases, the examination is contactless and painless, and it partly involves procedures that are carried out in ordinary outpatient practice. During it, our specially trained medical staff will use devices to examine:
  • the objective refractive error of the eye, i.e. measure the dioptres and the curvature of the cornea with an autorefractokeratometer,
  • intraocular pressure,
  • the thickness of the cornea, its curvature and shape – a 3D map of the cornea
  • wavefront analysis of the cornea – determination of the so-called higher-order aberrations
  • pupillometry – the width of the pupil
  • accommodation range – the extent of the lens's ability to focus
  • the inner layer of the cornea with an endothelial microscope,
  • the anterior and posterior segment of the eye using a slit lamp – this measurement is carried out by the doctor, as is the determination of dioptres, i.e. the subjective refraction
  • a scan of the retina and optic nerve by means of OCT – optical coherence tomography

Since we approach each patient individually, we also carry out supplementary examinations as needed, such as
  • nyctometry – examination of vision in twilight and after glare
  • perimetry - examination of the visual field
Our professional staff will be at your disposal for any questions throughout the entire time.

Is it possible to drive after the examination?

Since in 90% of cases we carry out the pre-operative examination on the day of the operation, after the pre-operative examination and the subsequent operation we do not recommend driving.

How much does the pre-operative examination cost?

The initial examination before a planned laser operation to correct dioptres is free of charge.

As part of the initial examination, we will thoroughly familiarise you with all the important information concerning the procedure – its course, price, preparation, post-operative care and so on. Our team of specialists approaches each client individually so that we always achieve the best possible result and so that you leave us satisfied. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact us. Your trust and health come first with us.
